Hey, old sport, I see you’re wearing your flapper costume from last Halloween. Are you trick-or-treating? No? You’re going to go see The Great Gatsby and you just wanted to get in the spirit.

I live right next to a movie theatre and I’ve been watching this happen all week: girls wearing really bad costumes and sequin hair bands parading down to see Gatsby. There’s a way to bring a little Art Deco style into your wardrobe and get into the spirit without looking like you’re going to a costume party. Let us help you.

Top: $33 from Asos, Pants: $34 from Asos, Necklace: $42 from Asos, Ring: $34 from Kate Spade New York, Nail Polish: $8 from Essie, Shoes: $20 from H&M

The Outfit: Pair a simple sleeveless top with deco detailing with bright summery coral pants and simple loafers. Finish the look with a gold lariat, a scalloped ring and some gorgeous coral nails. If flats aren’t your thing, look for a pair of t-strap pumps that will look awesome while you languish on a chaise lounge.

Appropriate for: Every day wear, a first date, work, family events where you really need to look like your life is totally together please stop worrying Grandma.

Sweater: $28 from Forever 21, Shorts: $46 from American Apparel, Shoes: $40 from Modcloth, Bag: $18 from Modcloth, Necklace: $3.80 from Forever 21, Earrings: $43 from Max and Chloe

The Outfit: A pair of high waisted shorts goes beautifully with a yellow eyed sweater that watches over those around you in a way that is both cute and mildly upsetting. Throw on an owl necklace, green earrings that will shine like beacons, and a pair of oxfords. Throw everything in a Gatsby tote and you’re ready to go and dripping with symbolism.

Appropriate for: Every day wear, school, museum and library trips, totally not accidentally running over your husband’s mistress in his car.

  1. Gah…. I wish I could afford all this gorgeous stuff!! Ah well… I’m sure I can find SOMETHING at a local thrift shop!

  2. I haven’t seen the movie yet, so excited because that time period is by far my favorite. Any recommendations for cheap dresses?

    • If you want cheap the first stop should always be your local Goodwill, followed by Conway or Marshall’s. There’s really no telling what will be at any of those stores but it’ll always be a deal. If you don’t find anything there you can swing by Forever 21, they have some sweet little drop waist dresses for under $25 and cheap deco jewelry in stock now.

  3. Those tea cups in the first set leave me with a great sense of longing. Where might I acquire them, please? (Sorry about the wording, I’ve been on a Game of Thrones bender and can’t quite seem to remove myself from it’s influence.)
